Swim

Train in Open Water
Open-water swimming involves a range of challenges, including swimming in cold temperatures and strong currents. It’s imperative that swimmers train in open water leading up to the triathlon to reach shore without draining too much energy and to familiarize themselves with being in the open water.
Front crawl/freestyle is the preferred stroke for triathlons because it’s the fastest. Most open water swimming training involves moderating fast and slow strokes, learning to sight a reference point to stay on track, and training in various weather conditions (with a buddy for safety).
Get the Right Gear
As race day approaches, participants will want to make sure they have gear that protects them from the elements and complies with all rules and regulations.
In June, the water around Alcatraz averages a chilly 58°F. Because of this, wetsuits are required. USA Triathlon rules state that wetsuits cannot exceed 5 mm thickness, including overlapping pieces. Competitors are provided colored swim caps denoting their age group, and they are allowed to wear goggles, neoprene caps, neoprene socks, and gloves.
A traditional road bike is recommended for this technical course, which features ample hills and curves. Helmets are required and must remain securely fastened at all times during riding. As for running shoes, the soles must be no thicker than 40mm, and they may not contain more than one rigid embedded plate.

Getting There
Out-of-towners can book flights to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and nearby Oakland International Airport (OAK). There are plenty of options for accommodations in the city, with several appealing choices in nearby neighborhoods like the Marina District, the Embarcadero, Pacific Heights, and Chinatown.
Keep in mind that parking for the triathlon is extremely limited, so bikes and public transportation might be your best bet for getting around on race day.
Those participating in the race will head over to Marina Green upon arrival to set up the bike transition area, then take a bus to Pier 3 and board a passenger ferry to Alcatraz Island.
Check-In
